THE ATEMPORAL

When chord progressions become sculptures.

The Design

T1 [0:00-0:03] - A1 [0:03-0:49] - T2 [0:49-]

T2 [0:00-0:21] - A2 [0:21-1:29] - T3 [1:29-]

The atemporal sections are open spaces for the audience to explore. There are no designated paths in the atemporal parts.

The A1 section happens when the theme first reappears. (Please refer to the recording.) The open space will allow the audience to examine the theme differently from the temporal state, where everything is fluid and difficult to grasp. Here the atemporal presents abstract sculptures that are created based on the three-note chord and geometry theory.

The A2 section takes place after the recapitulation when the the music drops to pianissimo. The music then unfolds itself with a decorative passage.

The 3D Geometry

The skeleton of the three-note chord space looks like the following:

According to the chord analysis, I mapped out the progressions within the chord space. The results are a bunch of very abstract forms:

The Model

Please note: I haven’t managed to adjust these forms for 3D printing before the exhibition. Instead, I handmade the sculptures to demonstrate the size and the placements in the model. As a result, sculptures showing in the pictures are not made with the designed materials.
